Daily Detox Rituals: Epsom Salt

Epsom salt has been SAVING my body lately. Between my daily yoga practice and my HIIT training (High Intensity Interval Training) there are days when I am so sore that simple tasks seem incredibly hard!! I’m talking simple tasks like brushing my teeth and actually, just getting out of bed for that matter lol. BUT, when I take a hot epsom salt bath before bed, I notice that I am significantly LESS SORE the next morning! That’s why I have made it a part of my nightly routine whenever possible!

Epsom salt is well-known for its benefits, and has been used for hundreds of years. Not only can it relax the nervous system, cure skin problems, soothe body pains and aching limbs, thus easing muscle strain; but it also aids in healing minor cuts, treating colds, congestion, and the biggest one of them all: draws out toxins from the body! Hence why I refer to this as a daily detox ritual. Epsom salt is straight up detoxifying! Studies have also shown that Epsom salt can help regulate electrolytes in your body, ensuring proper functioning of the muscles, nerves, and enzymes. In my opinion it is best used as a bath soak, because when dissolved in warm water, Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin. Furthermore, when the Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin it can replenish the level of magnesium in the body. Magnesium helps to produce serotonin, which is a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calmness and relaxation. Magnesium is also known to help you relax and reduce irritability by lowering the effects of adrenaline.

Now, for a long time I had a very difficult time staying in the bath for more than…let me be honest right now… 5 minutes. It’s easy for me to sit here and think I could soak for 10, 20, or even 30 minutes; but in all actuality, I am bored after the first 5 minutes. I’m certain I am not alone in this, which is why I compiled a list of things you can do while in the bath to keep you occupied so you can stay in longer! 🙂 The longer you stay in, the more benefits you can receive.

Bring a mug of soup in with you; I don’t know about you but I can definitely zone out longer if I am eating 😉

Call a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while; perfect time to catch up! Hopefully it’s a close friend and not a new friend because that may be… well awkward

Learn a new language via an ap on your iPhone or a CD; Hola!

Catch up on your favorite podcast ! Lately I have been listening to Secular Buddhism (its amazing! Please check it out!)

Get your oil pulling done (I sure do love multi-tasking lol)

Set your iPad or lap top up near the tub and catch up on your favorite show on Netflix


I love using Everyone Products epsom salt and essential oils, BUT if budget is a problem: did you know the 99 Cent store generally carries Epsom Salt? They usually always have 1 pound bags for $1 at my local 99 Cent store. And, most of the time they not only carry the plain Epsom Salt, but I always seem to find scented ones like lavender or eucalyptus!

So between it potentially costing as little as $1 AND having a list of things to do to keep you occupied while soaking, you can’t use cost or boredom as excuses!
